In April, 2017, Navigant’s Denver office and the veteran & military employee resource group (ERG) worked with a local VA hospital to hold a barbecue for residents of a halfway house for veterans.
The house is intended to provide a safe space for homeless veterans while also providing classes on things like budgeting, job skills, art, and music.
Mike Samborski, a senior consultant in the healthcare practice worked with internal groups to secure funding for the barbecue. With funding in hand, Mike worked with Sally Harris, part of the veterans and military ERG, to plan the event.
Mike emphasized that the barbecue, which fed more than 50 VA members, was a team effort. Some colleagues made shopping trips to Costco to purchase food for the barbecue, others did the grilling, and others shared their time and companionship with the veterans in attendance.
Mike is now working with the same groups to see if they can plan another, similar event around Veteran’s Day in November.
